Worldwide, the oboe (shawm) plays a meaningful role in ceremonial music. It serves as a call to gather, to ripen, to elevate the spirit. Often, it is accompanied by a double-headed drum. The percussionists on this recording are, in many cases, playing traditional music. The oboe improvisations, performed exclusively on the western classical oboe, are influenced and inspired by the styles, techniques, art, and music of the very many Oboes Of the world. Brenda Schuman-Post, unites the modern European oboe with its ethnic counterparts and revitalizes its role in the world of music.
Brenda Schuman-Post is a uniquely versatile, virtuoso oboist. Committed to changing the ways that people think about the oboe, she has traversed an intriguing, adventurous musical path. Her impressive career includes performances as a freelance orchestral and chamber musician; concerto and cantata soloist; blue grass, jazz, pop, world fusion, and classical performing and recording artist. With her oboe/piano/accordion duo, "Classical Trash - Classical Music With A Twist," she has revived delightful salon music and revitalized the classical concert, bringing the oboe and its music to a wide variety of audiences. She has played over 300 recitals, in almost every conceivable venue from concert halls to shopping malls, universities to county fairs, hospitals to drug rehabilitation centers.
An advocate of contemporary music, improvisation, and extended techniques, Brenda has inspired and premiered numerous compositions by Americans including Meyer Kupferman, Edmund Haines, Johnny Reinhard, and Kathleen St. John. Her interest in ethnic music and indigenous oboes (shawms) has led to her own innovative, improvised music. Brenda's CD Oboe Of The World has been praised by the press as "groundbreaking!"
